How to prepare your child for scholarship maths exams

Start with the exam, not the textbook

Scholarship maths papers are not school maths tests. They reward speed, pattern recognition and multi-step reasoning under time pressure — skills that everyday homework rarely exercises. The single most useful thing you can do is let your child experience a realistic, timed paper early, before any intensive practice. It sets a baseline, removes the fear of the unknown, and shows you exactly which topics need work.

From there, preparation becomes targeted instead of general: rather than "more maths", your child practises the two or three specific areas where marks are actually being lost.

A simple 12-week rhythm that works

Weeks 1–2: one timed mock exam to set the baseline, then review every wrong answer together — the review teaches more than the sitting. Weeks 3–8: short, frequent practice (10–20 minutes most days) focused on the weakest topics, with a fresh timed paper every fortnight to measure movement. Weeks 9–12: shift emphasis to pacing — full papers under exam timing, practising when to flag a hard question and move on.

Little and often beats cramming: five 15-minute sessions a week build far more retention than one weekend marathon, and they keep maths from becoming a source of dread.

Watch pacing, not just scores

Two children can score the same mark for opposite reasons: one runs out of time knowing the material, the other finishes early but makes careless slips. The fix is different for each — so when you review a practice exam, look at where time went, not just what was wrong. Questions left blank at the end usually signal a pacing problem, not a knowledge gap.

Keep confidence at the centre

Children sit better exams when they walk in expecting to do well. Celebrate specific strengths after every practice ("your fractions were nearly perfect"), frame weak areas as "next challenges", and never let one bad mock define the campaign. Confidence is a skill you can build deliberately — and it is worth marks on the day.

SimplyMaths automates this whole loop: timed, grade-matched mock exams with instant marking, reports that show mastery topic by topic, and a fresh "do today" plan after every paper. You can try a full mock exam free.
